Probable cause

The student pilot's failure to maintain airspeed, and the flight instructor's inadequate remedial action, which resulted in an inadvertant stall and uncontrolled descent into terrain.

During an instructional flight, the student pilot attempted to demonstrate the "soft field takeoff" technique. The airplane drifted left, and as the student pilot attempted to correct for the drift, the airplane became airborne, in a "cross controlled" condition. As the angle of attack reached 10 degrees nose up, the airplane rolled to the right, contacted the ground, and was substantially damaged. Examination of the airplane revealed no mechanical deficiencies.

Quoted verbatim from the NTSB record.
