The pilot reported that while in the airport traffic pattern, he initially extended the landing gear. He was subsequently instructed to extend his downwind leg to follow landing traffic, at which point he retracted the landing gear. He forgot to re-extend the landing gear before touchdown, and the airplane came to rest on the runway. The pilot stated that he was distracted by the extended downwind, multiple landing gear configuration changes, and the instruction to follow traffic. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the lower fuselage. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
